A number of interesting projects here, but as a "starter guide" it leaves a bit to be desired There's just not enough on the basics- how to make different cuts, how to control the blade, characteristics of different woods, choosing wood, and a lot more that the beginner needs to know. One of the projects requires woodturning tools. This is not a book conceived from scratch but a collection of articles from Woodcarving Illustrated. What there is, is good, but the beginner needs a lot that isn't here.
This is a basic guide designed to show you the basics so you'll know what is possible with whittling skills as you develope them. The book has great pictorials showing some easy projects and some intermediate projects. I have read complaints in other reviews that the book doesn't go far enough in teaching the basic cuts or control of your carving/whittling tool. Those things are best taught by personal instruction or by video instruction. Think about trying to learn how to ride a bicycle by someone showing you a pic and explaining it, difficult right? My opinion is that when reading through the book, you should augment your learning by going to Youtube and watching how others with experience do what you are trying to learn. There is much in this book for a beginner. Don't believe that your first projects have to be perfect, they won't be. My first carving of a viking ended up looking like the main character in the movie "Predators" and my first relief carving of a flower looked more like a Flying Saucer. Enjoy this book for what it is, basics. You'll have more questions as you learn and improve your skill but this will help get you started.
This book is simple and clear for my 9 year old to learn from, and yet the projects are mature enough to catch the attention of my teenagers.
I probably could have learned most of this online, but I still like that I have this on my bookshelf. It has some nice projects and was a good way to introduce myself into woodcarving. It helped with introducing me into the art of whittling.I am now an avid woodcarving and this book did indeed help me.
Not what I expected. This book is probably for someone who never picked up a carving/pocket knife in their life, but there are helpful aspects missing. instructions are vague and the pictures skip around on the progress of the pieces being carved. I found better progressive carvings on pintrest for free. I gave 3 stas because it showed me how to make a santa pencil, hello stocking stuffers!
Great book but probably not a true beginners guide. Maybe I wasn't purchasing for the right audience though. My nephew loves carving things with his knife. The directions and words used were way above his head though.
A great book for beginners. Good information on what type of knife to pick, the 4 basic cuts you make, and easy fun projects. I would recommend this book!
Great beginning projects by a number of different contributors so that you can see a few different styles of carving. I wish there was some more information on how to make some of the cuts for some of the more complex projects, but it just may take some practice. For the price, this is excellent.
