I wish this was laminated, but it still has a good selection of knots available. I keep it at my desk at work and practice knot tying with some mono that I have in my drawer when I'm stuck on conference calls...
I must say, this is quite a good book for learning to tie just about any knot you will need not only for fly fishing, but any fishing in general. It breaks it down at the very beginning where each knot is generally used so you can actually see where in the process each knot goes. Then, when you reach the page for each knot, it gives you a brief background on why each knot is used. Visualizations are large and easy to follow. It even goes into labeling tag ends and standing ends so you can follow where each end is through each step. Now, the reason this has 4 vs 5 stars is the fact that you more than likely will not be using this book to memorize knots in the comfort of your dry home. Generally you will take this with you and use it when you need it. With this being a paperback book, it does not get along well with water. I ended up waterproofing mine by taking clear packing tape (the large rolls), and essentially covering each page with the tape.
Awesome book. Clear illustrations. Why buy this book when there are phone apps that show knots, even with animation? Because I don't want to risk losing my phone in a trout stream. If I drop the book, not such a big deal.

Let me say again, "Best Knot Guide Ever!" Small, so it's easy to carry around. Cheap, so you don't have any reason not to buy it. Clear, easy to follow instructions for even the most complex knots. Comments for each knot describing situations when you might want this knot and what effect the knot has on the basic line strength. Knots grouped according to likely use scenarios. This little guide is practically perfect in every way.
I only wish the pages were waterproof
Was a gift for my boyfriend who was in the military. He took on fly fishing with other veterans a few years ago and talks about going again often... I thought this would be a great item for reference as I read other reviews. He loved it.
I bought this guide. The best part of this book is that it tells what knot(s) to use for each connection in fly fishing, that gives it 2 stars. Regarding tying the knots. I have never tied complex knots and this book did not provide enough instruction for me. I went online to find help. I found a product also carried by Amazon. Pro Knot cards by Pro-Knot. A J E Sherry company. The cards have better instructions. Their web site has a video of each knot and the video mirrors the cards making learning and remembering easy. The cards are laminated. The cards also indicate when to use the various knots.I recommend buying Pro-Knot cards instead
