One of the better books that seek spiritual insight from the Oz story, but loses its way at times. Nicely illustrated and not too deep in its Zen messages, it does offer some nice lessons for life. When it delves more into the characters it often gets pointless and unsettling. Why suggest that the Cowardly Lion is gay? That's just one example. But some of its insights and connections to the story are nice. I do think it is as successful than Darren Main's "Spiritual Journeys along the Yellow Brick Road", and better than Nathan Castle's "And Toto,Too" that takes a purely sentimental Christian approach. So we have both Zen and Christian approaches, but more recently, "The Wizard of Oz as a Parable" takes a universal spiritual approach. That one is deep. I think Joey Green is often not deep enough, and left out some key insights that seem obvious to me. Glaringly, he overlooks the poppy field. This is certainly one of the most significant spiritual metaphors in the story. Don't take Joey Green or Nathan Castle either one as overly profound.
This book has raised my consciousness of life and the spirituality that exists in the universe. The Wizard of Oz has been one of my all time favorite stories, and I've seen the movie many many times. However, never before did I realize the life (and "Zen") lessons contained therein. No need to be Buddhist or study Buddhism (or any religion for that fact) to thoroughly enjoy this book and provoke reflective thought. With almost each turned page, one learns something new about and reinforcing toward "the road less traveled." Educational and a marvelous read, simply marvelous!
This book is a long time favorite. I buy it over and over again as gifts for others. Love it.
I got this book as a gift from someone with a serious jones for the Wizard of Oz. At first, I just liked it because it reminded me of my friend and tossed it in a corner. Then one day I got around to reading it. Now, it stays where I can pick it up and open to read a simple passage in the moment. It is a fun and brilliant way to explore a different philosophy, or at least question how you choose to do things. I can't imagine many people in this culture being unaware of the examples and characters. Now when the Wizard of Oz comes on, I tend to filter it through this!
This is my third time buying this book. I keep on giving it away. The book is written in just a way that it makes the zen concept very easy to understand. It is a powerful book.
As a child, I looked forward to seeing this every year. I always felt there was another meaning or rather a deeper meaning to this movie, as each year, I noticed more and more. It's amazing to read...Light and enjoyable. It's a wonderful journey.
