I'm studying sanskrit and have been working through a number of translations. Just imagine if there were so many erratic translations of the bible in circulation! Most translations of the Bhagavad Gita are written by people who are not totally erudite in both English and Sanskrit, and so it is common to find either mistakes in the understanding of the sanskrit, or to endure stilted English. In addition many translations have the belief system of the translator shamelessly inserted.This is the best translation I have found so far in terms of word by word translation, and for learning sanskrit.ADVANTAGES:This is the most accurate, least biased translation that I have read. A lot of work has gone into parsing (identifying the grammar) of each sanskrit word. It retains some of the prosody and poetry of the original, unlike almost all other translations. Neither is it much encumbered by commentary. Each page has lots of space where you can add your own notes.DISADVANTAGESThe font size is too small. The devanagari script requires the vision of a hawk in bright sunlight.The layout could have been improved. The layout is excellent for word by word examination, but not perfect for an easy read through in either Sanskrit or English. The translation is a precise rendition of the original, rather than being a loose translation in easy flowing English.
This is indeed the best Baghavad Gita translation- and a "must have" for the serious student, because it provides the Sanskrit in the original Devanagari, the transliteration, then a word by word translation of the text. HOWEVER, the two stars are for the kindle edition which fails to provide any chapters in the table of contents! You can't Use it to open up to a chapter without going into the search window, and then be careful, because the chapters are in Roman numerals, and you will get a hundred hits to choose from. Expected more from this pricey kindle purchase
This kindle version is absolutely awful. No index, no table of contents, font size differs from page to page. Can I get my money back? This is terrible. The sample is not helpful because it ends before you even get to the verses (which is where the differing font sizes and positions begin). I'm really bummed with this.
The author has the Sanskrit text with English transliteration directly underneath. The right half of the page is the grammar, definitions of the words and declensions, i.e., m. nom. sg., n. gen. pl. etc. Also, footnotes on origins of words, metaphors. At the bottom of the page are the verses from the Sanskrit to comparable English. I can't express how helpful this is in my Sanskrit Class and my goal within the next 10 to 20 years to memorize the Bhagavad Gita like the several monks and scholars I know.
I have read innumerable translations of the Bhagavat Gita and I can clearly say that this version is the best translation I have yet seen.The Sanskrit language is such that a single verse can be translated to have multiple different meanings, all of which can be grammatically correct. Thus, various translations of the Bhagavat Gita often pick one or the other meaning of each verse based on the philosophical background of the translator. While every translator must make a decision on which meaning they they want to translate, often, that decision remains unclear to the reader. In this book, the author has clearly noted how he has broken up the grammar of every single word in his translation. This transparency allows any reader with a basic knowledge of Sanskrit to more easily interpret the translation on one's own. This is a boon for the academic study of this powerful text.
A Bhagavad Gita which gives the Sanskrit, phonology, grammar, word by word translaion, and an English rendering. It is a great way to become familiar with the Bhagavad Gita in its original language. If one is studying Sanskrit then this is also a viable tool to have for it gives one a deeper understanding of Sanskrit.It is beautifully organized. The grammar is on the right hand side if one chooses to dwell into this dimension, and for the quick reader the English rendering is at the bottom of the page.All in all a great version.
Well done. The blank space at the bottom of each page makes this version ideal for your thoughts or notes from a group discussion. I have really enjoyed the author’s breakdown and poetic bottom line.
Needed this for a class--perfect in every way. Could take all my notes on the pages. Great to have the sanskrit, written text, english and notes--it was all there.
