I am absolutely amazed as I flip through this book. The book itself is a very good quality. With that said, the contents are amazing! She covers everything from skin tone to soap bubbles! 3d objects, tears, snow, backgrounds, animal fur.... and on, and on, and on. I have no doubt, I will spend HOURS working with this book. I absolutely love it!
I was blown away by the amount of instructional content in this book. Helen is not only a coloring book illustrator, she was first an artist. She has applied many of her art techniques in coloring book form. This colorful guide shows us, step by step, how to achieve special effects on our pages. She even uses mediums that I would have never thought of on coloring book images. Water droplets on leaves, gems, balloons, wood grain, sparkly fairy dust, chrome, gold, silver, so many more than I can name.She's given us practice pages to try out the techniques. I would recommend copying and printing the practice pages so you can keep practicing.Also on her website she is giving us even more material to go along with the book. I just can't say enough about this colorist's guide. I'll do a video walk through later this week and upload it here.Don't miss this one!
Overall, I'm glad I bought the book. I would have loved to have had the book when I first started coloring. There are still dozens of things here that I didn't know before looking at the book. I find some of the instructions are a little vague. Having said that, I would still buy a book 2. I find youtube tutorials time consuming to find what I'm looking for and too slow to watch. I much prefer having a book to flip through when I need some help.
I'm so happy that I ordered this book. It arrived yesterday, and I spent my usual 2 hours of coloring time after dinner, just devouring the pages of information inside!There are many techniques explained clearly, step by step, and spaces within the book for you to "do it yourself". Personally, I plan to copy those pages, to practice repeatedly until I perfectly reproduce what I see in the book... THEN, I may color inside.Or, perhaps I'll leave it blank, to be passed down to the younger, budding colorists in my family. It's just that good.There are mediums suggested that I had never even thought of. I feel excited to get to trying my hand at these special effects, and I'm sure anyone else who loves coloring will feel the same.Go ahead, add to cart!
I love this book, the diagrams and instructions are very clear and easy to follow. The content is amazing, it covers a huge variety of techniques. I have done quite a lot of colouring, and you never stop learning, but I started the exercises from the beginning and am having so much fun. I can't wait for the next book.
I wanted to update my original review by adding some images of what I have learned to do. I also want to share a little tip that I find works nicely for me. I take tracing paper and place it on top of each step and color with my pencils. I get a good feel for the process. I keep learning and improving my coloring skills. I am very thankful for this book and am definitely looking forward to the next edition. You will need to know how to use the techniques from this edition in order to be able to complete some of the techniques in the next edition. Not sure how many that will entail. It is well worth learning now as you can see sneak peeks of the upcoming additions on Ms. Elliston's social media page. Now for my original review. I don't know where to begin. This Guide is fantastic. I am new to Adult Coloring and am so grateful that Helen developed this easy step by step guide to really make a difference in your pictures. I still have a lot to learn but have already seen a difference in how my images are turning out. I love that Helen is very active on Social Media and has asked for input on her 2nd Edition. I am definitely looking forward to that Guide as well. Colorist's Special Effects is well done. You have easy to understand photos along with instructions to get many desired effects. From Chrome, Hair, Skin, Lips, Eye Glasses and more, there is something new to learn at every turn. There are a lot of tricks for backgrounds as well as everyday items that add to your colored pieces. Glitter nail polish has become one of my favorite items to make certain images pop. If you want to take your Coloring to a Higher Level, I highly recommend this book. Learn to do jewels, bugs, tear drops, water drops, paint drops and more. I could go on and on, but if you purchase the book you will see what I am talking about. I am enclosing just a small sampling of what I have done. My clouds had an oopsy. They turned out beautifully, but then my Dog decided she wanted my attention right then. I recovered the best I could. Lesson learned, play with Dog before Coloring. Thank you, Ms. Elliston, for such a lovely Book. This book makes great gifts for friends that are Coloring as well. Have gifted to some special people.
This book is fantastic! It is very well put together and has all of the techniques, tips and tricks and guides that I've been needing to advance my coloring skills! From simple shading gradients, coloring hair, skin, eyes, fairy wings, etc. To mastering gems of all kinds and even making items appear to be metal. We all know that can be a tricky thing to achieve! This book is easy to understand and extremely helpful. The author lays everything out in brilliant color for you and gives you places to practice all of the tutorials. I wish I could give it 10 stars!
I thought my work had been advancing nicely on its own, until I purchased this amazing guide. It covers everything from basic blending and shading techniques, to more advanced drawing techniques, with spots to practice what you’ve learned. It also has a lot of tips for coloring elements found in most of the popular adult coloring books, such as fairies, gems, flowers, and crystals. There are several blank coloring charts in the back, which happened to be in need of. I followed along with the steps for drawing an eye and lips and they turned out amazing, especially since I’ve never drawn them on my own before!
