If you have never seen Susan Tuttle's work, go to her website right now! She is amazing. When this book came out, I had to get it right away. It has not disappointed me in any way. I even contacted Susan to ask her for some camera recommendations, thinking it would be weeks before I heard back. I received a lovely, informative email the next day. Wow. I wish I could take her classes in person. I'll be using this book for a long, long time. The iphone photography section is very cool.
Susan Tuttle's "Art of Everyday Photography" is just that! Susan has a way of explaining the various aspects of and settings on your camera so that you can understand, and so you actually want to go and give it a try. And she inspires me to see the beauty in the everyday, and to capture those fleeting, yet meaningful moments. Whether it's portraits, landscape, still life or action shots of family members, Susan covers it all in concise, helpful and practical terms.This is a book you can pick up over and over again, and always get something new from--little tips or "read me" sections that make the complicated more understandable and easily remembered. As primarily a mobile photographer, I really enjoyed the mobile sections and the suggestions for getting more out of your mobile device.Thank you, Susan, for your wonderful way of explaining everyday photography and for your creative way of seeing the world.
I was thrilled when I received my copy in the mail. I look forward to Susan's great tips,ideas, and her wonderful creative side. Making great photos into some awesome photo creations. I love to be creative and in this book she gives great creative advice and ideas from which lenses to be creative with to which modes on the DSLR to achieve what I am looking for. Wonderful lighting tips and techniques that will be very useful. There is a section in the book for photography with your mobile device in which I also use quite often as well. Over all another great and informative book from Susan.
Susan Tuttle is an award winning photographer with a breathtaking style that is all her own. In this book, she shares her techniques with the reader. I think it is the most comprehensive photography book that I own. Reading this book is as though you were following Susan as she goes about taking photos, explaining how she shoots--lighting, camera settings, lenses, etc., in a manner that is easy for the beginner, but not boring for the experienced photographer. She also explains mobile phone photography and includes many guest photographers and their work. I love how she includes the camera settings with each photo in the book!Also, if you have ever considered taking any of Susan's online courses, (each one is different--there is no repetition) do not hesitate! I have taken many of them and cannot recommend them and this wonderful book enough!
I am no newcomer to photography or photography books, so I wasn't sure what to expect with Susan's new book. But because I love Susan's work I thought I would order it and have a look. It is a wonderful book. I am picking up new tips and tricks as I read though it. I am taking my time and digesting each section throughly. I am planning on taking this book with us on vacation soon, so that I can reference things for my husband so that he will understand what he is doing or what he needs to do, better than his wife telling him what to do. My husband is new to photography and uses one of my old DSLR's. I love that he is willing to learn for me so that we can enjoy this hobby together. Susan's book will be so helpful with the teaching aspect.
There are many books, "how tos" on various websites, and of course, the camera manual itself as to how to use the various settings on a DSLR, however they tend to have either information that is poorly organized, or which requires so much cross-referencing to other parts that it's hard to wrap your brain around one concept without getting distracted by another. (And, FWIW, I consider myself to be technically savvy and oriented.) From a technical perspective, this book pulls it all together in a clear, straightforward manner, with full explanations together with various "read me" sidebars that neatly summarizes the concepts and the various settings for easy reference. Then, additional chapters address the types of settings and techniques for different types of photos you would take -- portraits, landscapes and nature, travel, etc., with a summary of tips for each kind that can be used as a quick reference. I've been learning at an exponential rate from this book and have daily HEY, THAT REALLY WORKS!!!!! moments. I even got some great shots of the moon during the lunar eclipse last month ( decent dead-of-night photos were eluding me up until then).Even though I originally bought this book for the technical information only -- that is, gain better proficiency with the DSLR manual settings and composition, Susan Tuttle delivers on the artistic aspect and offers plenty of advice for mobile photography. I also enjoyed the fact that she included the work and perspective of other photographers as well. Finally, it's nice to see a book on this topic that uses visually interesting photos to demonstrate the techniques -- it's a pleasure to look at and read. (In a world of endless possibilities, am I the only one to be astounded by books and courses about a visual medium such as photography that choose uninteresting subject material to demonstrate a concept?).But then again, I wasn't surprised that the book would be visually beautiful, since I was already familiar with Tuttle's "Digital Expressions." I keep it readily accessible just for it's beauty. (Even though it references Photoshop Elements, the concepts are readily transferable to all kinds of digital, artistic phtotography/collage/mixed media.) SusanTuttle also offers online courses on "iphoneography" and mixed medial on her website, which I can highly recommend for folks interested in mixing their traditionally-created art with the digital.
