This book is a disappointment because the author comes with a large axe to grind and it remains so dull at the point that it is an exercise in futility. To give Allen his due he has done substantial research and much of text has value for the Furtwangler student because of this research. The critical flaw is the conclusions that Allen tries to draw from this research. He spends a great deal of time on Furtwangler's writing, which I appreciate. But when he quotes Furtwangler as arguing that the future belongs to tonality rather than an atonal approach to composition he then concludes that this is a sign of anti-Semitism because Arnold Schoenberg was Jewish. Honestly. I suppose this means Alan Hovhaness is also an anti-Semite because he said "To me, atonality is against nature." Truly weak. Allen spends a good deal of time exploring Furtwangler's underlying philosophical foundation, which is helpful to the reader. But then Allen feels compelled to say Furtwangler should not have had such a philosophical base because elements of it were used by the Nazis to appeal to people. But vast numbers of people have led honorable and virtuous lives with similar philosophical underpinnings. You might as well argue that you can't enjoy Bruckner's work because the Nazis promoted Bruckner. So you do get value from his research but in the end you must reject most of the conclusions that Allen draws.I could only recommend this book to people who are already fairly well acquainted with Furtwangler's life, work and thought. Those probably can find value. People who want to understand the struggle between Furtwangler and the Nazis should turn to Fred Prieberg's "Trial of Strength: Wilhelm Furtwangler in the Third Reich."
